UNICEF- Nutrition -0627-0645 Community Nutrition Worker (CNW): Rozina Akter, successfully referred Jannatul Mawa (9 month) to the community clinic for severe malnutrition treatment Community Healthcare Provider (CHCP): Rupa Barua is now taking care of her. When Rozina Akter Community Nutrition worker visited Jannatul Mawa (9 months), she identified that the baby was suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition. Jannatul had also had a number of medical complications in the previous months - pneumonia, fevere and loss of appetite. Her mother did not know what to do because Jannatal did not want to cooperate when she tried to feed her. Rozina referred Jannatul Mawa to the SAM unit of Ramu Upazilla Health Complex. However, initially Jannatul’s father was reluctant. He is a shopkeeper and the family also has one other young child to take care of. He advised his wife not to go but eventually Rozina convinced them how serious the need for urgent, inpatient treatment was. After Jannatul was admitted in January 2019, she has begun the path to recovery. In 2018, UNICEF supported host families in Cox’s Bazar through the diligence of 60 Community Nutrition Volunteers who screened over 28,000 children for malnutrition. In total, 419 children were treated in UNICEF supported in-patient SAM units in Cox’s Bazar District Hospital and Upazilla Health Complexes in Ukhiya, Teknaf, Ramu, and Pekua. Meanwhile, over 58,000 pregnant and lactating women received high quality counselling and messaging on care and feeding practices for infants and young children.
