Morium Begum, Community Nutrition Worker identified Marufa Akter Eva with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM)
Mother: Jobaida Akter (16) housewife, father: Md. Sharif (28), driver
Referral mechanism: Following a house to house visit by the Community Nutrition worker, Marufa was identified as being Severe Acute Malnourished in August 2018. Her mother was immediately informed about the severity of SAM. Marufa was brought to the nearby Community Clinic and once SAM was re-confirmed, she was referred to the district hospital for treatment. Extensive counseling was provided to Marufa’s parents to ensure they would agree to her hospital admission. Marufa and her mother stayed in the hospital for 15 days while she received inpatient care. Marufa is making a strong recovery and her mother continues to breastfeed and provides her with a diverse, nutrient rich diet.
In 2018, UNICEF supported host families in Cox’s Bazar through the diligence of 60 Community Nutrition Volunteers who screened over 28,000 children for malnutrition.
