Fatema Begum (foster mother).
Fatema and her husband foster Mohammad Zohar, having lost their own three children at an early age.
They are receiving cash assistance each month, since the UNICEF and Department of Social Services program began in June 2018. Although they receive food assistance, they say it is not enough to feed their family. They are very pleased to receive this extra money which they use to buy snacks, fruit, fish and clothes for Zohar, their foster child.
There is a proverb in Myanmar, if you raise a child, you will have your own. So, they are raising Zohar like as their own. They dream that Zohar will grow up to do an excellent job for his community and take care of his foster parents.
UNICEF and the Department of Social Services launched an integrated case management and cash assistance program in June 2018, benefitting 4,200 children and 3,000 foster caregivers. Cash assistance is provided to foster families of separated, unaccompanied and child headed households. This project will expand in 2019 to target 9,000 refugee children to help vulnerable families.
